INDIANA COMMISSION for WOMEN calls for Nominees
The Indiana Commission for Women (ICW) is seeking nominations for the 2015 Torchbearer Awards. Indiana Torchbearers are Indiana’s most prestigious recognition of women. They have stepped forward as leaders by breaking down barriers to women’s full participation. “These women are lasting legacies for us all by overcoming immense challenges with courage, perseverance and compassion,” said Kristin Svyantek Garvey, Executive Director of the Indiana Commission for Women Board of Commissioners. “They serve as inspiration for others by facing tough choices, demonstrating character and making significant contributions to their communities and to the State of Indiana.”
Recipients will be selected from a pool of nominated candidates who have overcome obstacles, made extraordinary contributions or been pioneers throughout their lives. Selection will be based on the recipients’ demonstrated achievement in the areas of their professional careers, community leadership and/or public service. Recipients must be living at the time of their nomination. Nominations will be evaluated with considerable attention given to those women who have been pioneers, have removed barriers and/or have made a considerable impact to the advancement of women in Indiana.
Bloomington residents honored in the past have been Charlotte Zietlow, Judge Vi Taliaferro, Jane Martin, Rabbi Sue Shifron, and Vernell Thomas from Crane. Our own Senator Vi Simpson served on the commission for many years, and is ineligible for the award.

Reverse Citizen’s United would like to invite a contingent from Democratic Women's Caucus to attend to one of the 8 tentacles for the parade. They need a minimum of two to commit to that, but an unlimited number is welcome to walk with, wear t shirts from your group, and make your own signs about how this dark money has affected politics. The tentacles will be labeled this year: education, environment, labor, voting, government, politics, health care, and media.

CALL TO ACTION! IT'LL JUST TAKE A MINUTE!
Here they go again. Republicans in Congress have introduced another bill to cut off women’s access to health care. This time they are trying to eliminate Title X, the only federal program devoted to providing low-income women with family planning services, birth control, well-woman visits, and STD and cancer screenings.
Why do Republicans want to cut a program that not only provides vital medical care to nearly 4.6 million women but saved around two billion dollars last year?2 Because a quarter of Title X funds go to Planned Parenthood clinics. And there’s no better way to score political points with your extremist, anti-woman base, than to attack Planned Parenthood — no matter the consequences for women and their families.
The Fiscal Year 2016 Labor, Health and Human Services Funding Bill not onlyguts Title X, it also eliminates 80 percent of funds for comprehensive teen pregnancy prevention, and doubles funding for abstinence-only sex education, which has been proven to be ineffective. If it passes it would have a devastating impact on women’s health, especially for the 4.6 million women who depend on Title X every year — who are mainly women in rural communities and low-income women.
It’s the height of hypocrisy that a Republican party committed to blocking women’s access to abortion would slash a program that prevented 1.2 million unplanned pregnancies in 2010. It shows that Republicans are so committed to grandstanding against Planned Parenthood that they’re willing to throw women and their families under the bus.
