Our speaker is Kathy Davis, the first woman to serve as Lt. Governor of Indiana. Davis graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978 and earned her MBA from Harvard in 1982. After Harvard, Davis worked at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus. In 1989, Davis became Deputy Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation. From 1995 to 1997, she served as state budget director, and in 1997 became secretary of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. Davis also managed the start-up of the Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund in 1999. She was named controller for Indianapolis by Bart Peterson. As Lt. Governor, Davis served as president of the Senate, director of the Indiana Department of Commerce, the commissioner of Agriculture, and chair of Indiana's Counter Terrorism and Security Council.

Apply for Indiana Senate Democratic Internship
Each year, the Indiana State Senate offers Hoosier students a chance to participate in their state government. Spring semester internships are available to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent college graduates who are Indiana residents or are enrolled at an in-state university.
The 2016 Senate Internship will begin in January and end in mid-March. The Senate Democrats hire legislative interns who work directly with one or two lawmakers, as well as interns specializing in the fields of communications, law, policy and public finance. The deadline to submit an application for the 2016 program is October 31.

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, neuroanatomist and best-selling author of My Stroke of Insight, will be presenting on “Understanding the Teenage Brain.” Dr. Taylor is a Harvard-trained brain scientist and was featured in the first TED talk to go viral. She experienced a rare form of stroke in 1996 and took 8 years to fully recover. She has been an advocate for those who have experienced neurological trauma and created a not-for-profit organization focused on providing educational services and promoting programs related to the advancement of brain awareness, appreciation, exploration, education, injury prevention, neurological recovery, and the value of movement on mental and physical health. Monroe County Democratic Party JJ Dinner

The Jefferson-Jackson dinner is the main fundraising effort for the local Democratic Party. Funds raised will support a new headquarters and invest in strategies to organize volunteers and mobilize voters. Dedication for Women in Government Plaza Honoring Sophia Travis
Sunday, October 4, 1-3 p.m.
Everyone in Monroe County is invited to attend the dedication for the Women in Government Plaza at the Courthouse honoring the late County Councilor and community activist Sophia Travis. Commissioned by artist Dale Enochs, the Friends of Sophia Travis have designed a seating plaza to honor women who serve our government: past, present and future. There will be food trucks, music and great speakers! Bring your picnic blanket to the south side of the Courthouse Square to see the unveiling of the plaza that will be a gift for our county for years to come! This celebratory event will happen rain or shine!
Hospital Community Outreach Committee to Host Two Public Input Forums
The Community Outreach committee, appointed by the IU Health Bloomington Hospital Site Reutilization Steering Committee, will host two forums for the public regarding the future of the current IU Health Bloomington Hospital site. The first forum will take place on Thursday, October 8 from 5:30-7 p.m. in Wegmiller Auditorium at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital, 601 W. 2nd St. Thesecond forum will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 5:30-7 in the City Hall Council Chambers, 401 N. Morton St.
The purpose of these meetings is to gather input from the community about the future of the current hospital site. Barry Lessow, Executive Director of United Way of Monroe County is the team leader of the Community Outreach committee. A representative from IU Health Bloomington will provide a brief update on the hospital project. Members of the public are welcome to attend to make short presentations about what they would like to see happen at the site as well as to bring visuals to demonstrate ideas. People may submit questions or comments in advance to [email protected].

You’ve heard that Shelli Yoder is running for the 9thCongressional District Democratic Nomination in the primary in 2016. Shelli has so far received funding from the following Congressional members or their PACs: John Yarmouth, KY; Andre Carson, IN; Joe Donnelly, IN; and Evan Bayh! These folks have real faith in Shelli and want her to win. They know she can improve the divide and divisiveness in DC by her presence there. But here's a kicker--the DCCC and Emily’s List have indicated they MIGHT be interested in steering support Shelli's way, but they base decisions to help a candidate on two things: money and polling numbers. They’ve said Shelli would demonstrate viability by raising$200,000 by the end of the first reporting period of her campaign, September 30, 2015. Shelli’s been on the phone every spare moment to achieve this goal. But she needs our help NOW. We can to do two things to help Shelli:
- Donate to her campaign and demonstrate her viability!
- Contact the DCCC and Emily's List and tell them our District wants Shelli in Congress and she merits their support!
