DON'T THINK OF AN ELEPHANT!
Did you just think of an elephant? Of course you did...
What are you reading this summer? At our June Meeting DWC members shared some of the books they've been reading to keep up to date, to stay informed, to better help candidates be successful, and sometimes, just to keep sane. We had a wonderful show and tell at breakfast and a fun round table discussion at lunch... if you missed it, a list of the books and synopses is coming your way soon....
But back to the elephant in the room... one of the books discussed at breakfast was George Lakoff's Don’t Think of an Elephant! In the book, Lakoff explains how framing is about ideas―ideas that come before policy, ideas that make sense of facts, ideas that are proactive not reactive, positive not negative, ideas that need to be communicated out loud every day in public. Republicans have been all too successful at sandwiching messages into soundbites and reducing policies to short (and misleading) phrases - think “death tax”, “school choice” or “activist judge.” Lakoff, urges us to go beyond the typical laundry list of facts, policies, and programs and present a clear moral vision to the country―one that is traditionally American and can become a guidepost for developing compassionate, effective policy that upholds citizens’ well-being and freedom. It’s time to educate ourselves, reclaim and reframe our own messages and to get out and talk to the people, those who agree with us and those who don’t.

On May 22, Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, announced a new initiative to “train and encourage” high school and college-aged young women to find a place in the political arena. “Rise To Run” brings together female leaders from myriad perspectives, on and offline, to prepare a generation of young women to take on powerful political roles in this country.
We're excited that a pilot will be in Bloomington, focusing on young progressive women in our community who will be the future leaders of tomorrow!

DEADLINE FOR EMERGING LEADERS PROJECT APPLICATIONS IS JUNE 15!
Applications are being accepted for the Indiana Democratic Emerging Leaders Project. The project is a free, year-long leadership development program designed to help build the Indiana Democratic Party’s bench of future public servants. The program will include four conferences throughout the year starting in September geared toward honing the skills of leaders ages 21 to 40 in the areas of campaign management, public policy, public service, and party building. Several women from the DWC are graduates of this program, including Darcie Fawcett, Allison Chopra, Kaisa Goodman, and Jessica McClellan. We're sure they would be willing to share their impressions of the program, and encourage you to apply.
SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATION FOR THE 2017 TORCHBEARER AWARDS!
The Indiana Commission for Women is accepting nominations for the 2017 Torchbearer Awards. Recipients have overcome adversity, made extraordinary contributions, or been pioneers throughout their lives. These women can be pioneers in their professional career. They can be advocates who have removed barriers to women's full participation in all aspects of society. They can be unsung "sheroes" who have made considerable impact on the advancement of women in Indiana.

Recipients of the 2017 Torchbearer Awards will be announced at an Awards Ceremony on September 27, 2017, at the Indiana Historical Society.

Contact Rep. Trey Hollingsworth to express how you feel about his AHCA vote. Persuade Senators Donnelly and Young to keep thousands of Hoosiers insured. Share your story on why this issue is important to you.
Monroe County NOW will provide postcards, scripts, and a space to call and write your members of Congress. There will also be light snacks; feel free to bring something simple to share, potluck style.

Day Of Action—MCDP Precinct Canvassing
Join the MCDP to canvass! They are excited by the energy of volunteers eager to get out and listen to our friends, neighbors, and fellow Hoosiers about how best the party can work for them. This month there is an updated schedule to split the groups into two shifts: one beginning at 1:00 p.m and the other beginning at 3:00 p.m. Arrive to pick up walk packets, receive brief training. Each shift should last approximately 2 hours, in which you will canvass in pairs, followed by a debrief. Meet at Bryan Park by the Henderson Shelter (the one closest to the westside parking area). RSVP by email to Teri Bleuel MCDP canvassing will take place on the second Saturday of each month from June to September.

REDISTRICTING REFORM: DID THE GERRYMANDER EAT YOUR VOTE?
On the eve of Elbridge Gerry’s birthday, July 16, the LWVBMC will sponsor a leisurely walk around the borders between Indiana House districts 60, 61, and 62. In 1812, Gerry lent his name to just such an oddly shaped bit of creative district - drawing around Boston that resembled a salamander, thus the name “Gerrymander.”
