In recent years the original meaning of Memorial Day as a day of remembrance for those who died fighting for our country has been overshadowed by its secondary meaning as the first day of the summer season, a day for picnics and outings to the beach and swimming pools. But in this strangest of Mays, after two months of sheltering in place and social distancing, we are called to honor not only the heroes of the past but the heroes of the present moment—the unsung and often underpaid health workers, grocery store employees, meatpackers, bus drivers--who risked their lives to provide medical care, food, and transportation for their fellow Americans. We honor them first by continuing to observe the public health measures instituted to curb transmission of the virus, mindful of warnings that rushing to "reopen" will almost certainly lead to a second wave of infection from which our public-health heroes don't have the luxury of retreating. Second, we honor them with our votes for candidates who take seriously their mandate to serve their constituents and work to create a better and more just society.

And speaking of voting, here's everything you need to know about voting in the 2020 Primary if you have not voted already.

For this Primary only, the Indiana Election Commission waived requirements for Absentee-By-Mail voting. Therefore all registered Indiana voters were able vote by mail in the 2020 primary and were encouraged to use this option to help protect not only the voters in the county, but our county workers as well.

HOW TO VOTE IN THE 2020 PRIMARY:

The opportunity to VOTE BY MAIL is over for the 2020 primary - Absentee-by-Mail Ballot applications were due at the Election Office by May 21.
If you, like about 13,000 or so of your fellow voters, waited until the last week to send in your applications, please be patient. The Election Office has been working overtime to process and get those ballots sent out and the final ballots should be mailed on Tuesday after the holiday.

Complete Your Ballot: Once your application has been received and processed they will mail you a ballot – fill out the ballot, complete the information on the postage paid envelope and sign the envelope as directed.

Your completed Ballot must be received by the Election Office by Noon on Primary Election Day – June 2.

If you are concerned that your ballot might not be delivered on time through the USPS, ballots can be dropped off at Election Central, 401 E. 7th St. in person. There is a mail slot in the double doors (not the accessible entrance) look for the sign. Please note that in the state of Indiana only you, your family members or an appointed attorney can legally deliver your ballot.

EARLY VOTING:
Absentee in person voting will take place from May 26 through June 1st at Election Central, 401 W. 7th St., Suite 100, Bloomington, Indiana. Remember to bring your photo ID, wear a mask and practice good social distancing.
Hours: 
Tuesday, May 26 through Friday May 29: 8am to 6pm
Saturday, May 30: 9am to 4pm
Monday, June 1: 8am to Noon

PRIMARY DAY VOTING: June 2 at your poliing location
Vote at your polling place between 6am and 6pm - note: this may not be the same location as you have voted in the past. Remember to bring your photo ID, wear a mask and practice good social distancing.

For this Primary only, the Indiana Election Commission has waived requirements for Absentee-By-Mail voting. Polls are open 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., prevailing local time. Due to the need to keep workers and voters safe, as well as balancing the reduced number of workers available, a need to provide as much coverage of the county as possible and the wish to be sensitive to the needs of the regular hosts, there will be 7 polls open on Primary Election Day: at Edgewood High School, Southside Christian Church, Sherwood Oaks, Grandview Elementary, Arlington Elementary, City Hall and City Church. If you must vote on primary day you will be able to check where your precinct will be voting on June 2 and get directions as well as information about who is on your ballot online at indianavoters.com.
DEADLINE by noon, for a voter to return an absentee-by-mail ballot to Election Central

The Monroe County Election Division is looking for democratic poll workers to work as Inspectors, Judges, Clerks and Sheriffs. 
To work the polls in the 2020 Primary you must:
     • Be a registered voter in the state of Indiana.
     • Attend training,  provided by the Election Board.
     • Have access to transportation.
You will be paid for training, working at the polls and a $25 food allowance. Training will take place between May 21 and May 29, 2020.
There will be some major differences between this primary and previous years. Polling sites have been reduced to seven locations: Arlington Heights Elementary, Bloomington City Hall, City Church, Edgewood High School, Grandview School, Sherwood Oaks Church and Southside Christian Church.
All workers will be supplied a face shield, mask, gloves and plenty of hand sanitizer as well as continuous cleaning throughout the day. There will be someone at each location designated to monitor flow of traffic and social distancing.  
There is a first come first served basis for applicants seeking to work the polls as the time to fill roles and train workers is limited.

Annie Glenn passed away last week at age 100 of complications from the Covid-19 virus. She never went into space or ran for office but was a major force anyway. Here’s Connie Schultz’s moving tribute.

Betty Cockrum got her early experience in government and politics right here in Bloomington. She was a powerful force in Indiana for many years... both in government and at Planned Parenthood. She always had class and will be sadly missed.
State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Ogden Dunes) made the following statement in response to the tragic news:
“I am saddened beyond words to hear of Betty’s passing. Betty was a hero and an inspiration to many and a constant fighter for women in the Hoosier state. But, to me, Betty was much more than that. She was a close friend and a constant source of support and encouragement both personally and in my political career. During her 15 years with Planned Parenthood, she demonstrated the utmost integrity and courage, even in the face of constant harassment and threats. Betty’s strength to always do what was right and her fighting spirit will be remembered for years to come. Women across Indiana have lost a champion. She will be sorely missed.”

67-year-old advocate was a warrior for the underprivileged and vulnerable citizens of Indiana and Kentucky
INDIANAPOLIS – It is with great sorrow that the family of Betty Lou Fuller Cockrum, former Indiana State Budget Director and leader of Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, announces her passing over the weekend.
“Betty Cockrum was so many things to so many people,” read a statement from her sons. “Countless lives touched, careers built, families supported, jobs created, storms weathered and mountains moved. While she was busy changing the world for the better, for us, she was just ‘Mom.’”
“She was not supposed to leave us so soon,” they added. “She had so much left that she wanted to do, more lives to touch, and much more mothering and grandmothering to do. We will cherish all that she has gifted us, which is more love, wisdom and guidance than most will ever know.”
Ms. Cockrum served as president and CEO of Planned Parenthood for 15 years. Under her leadership, Planned Parenthood went through several mergers to become what it is today, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky. Prior to joining Planned Parenthood, Cockrum served as the state budget director and head of the Department of Administration for former Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon and earlier as Bloomington's city controller after working for the Bloomington Redevelopment Department. 
“Betty ran a tight ship at Bloomington City Hall and brought street smarts and passion to state government in every job she took on,” said John Goss, former deputy mayor of Bloomington.
The youngest of eight children, Cockrum was born March 25, 1953 on a 40-acre hog farm outside Wolcottville, Ind. in LaGrange County. She attended Ball State University after graduating high school and earned her bachelor’s degree in 2006 from Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis.
Ms. Cockrum is survived by her two sons and her four grandchildren. Arrangements are pending. Her sons have asked that in the spirit of her passion and career, that donations be made in her name to the Julian Center for victims of domestic violence: https://www.juliancenter.org/.

June 5-7 - #wearorange weekend
While we're all staying at home or working jobs deemed essential, we'll all Wear Orange on June 5th for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. We Wear Orange to honor the more than 100 Americans shot and killed every day and the hundreds more wounded.
Our local Moms Demand Action have planned a few activities to allow people to mark Wear Orange weekend while socially distancing:
* posting "Wear Orange/We Can End Gun Violence" yard signs (we will deliver to your door)
* painting orange rocks with gun violence awareness messages and dropping them off at the Square in front of the Peace statue (as per attached) -- great activity to do with kiddos
* distributing orange lanterns (with kite string to avoid environmental damage) for launching on the night of June 5th. 
There is a limited supply of signs and lanterns, so please contact Rachael Guglielmo to let them know if you'd like one and they’ll let you know if they can get it to you!
