This weekend’s rain notwithstanding, the world is looking just a bit brighter after the Republican Party’s cruel bid to “repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act died an ignominious death after House Republicans pulled the bill due to lack of support. Kudos to DWC members who were among the legions of Americans who protested, attended town halls, petitioned their representatives, and jammed congressional phone lines to save health care for the nation.

The ACLU is now accepting applications for a week long advocacy training and leadership development seminar at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., from July 29 – August 5, 2017.
The ACLU Summer Advocacy Institute will bring together a diverse group of high school juniors and seniors from across the United States to participate in an advanced, firsthand learning experience for the next generation of social justice advocates. Through an intensive eight-day program, students will learn directly from lawyers, lobbyists, community activists, and other experts working to defend the civil rights and liberties critical to a free and open society. The DWC Steering Committee is the group that organizes and manages the business of the DWC. We do much of our work through smaller groups or committees, and we welcome help from the membership to bring fresh ideas and hands to the work of running our operation.
• Program Committee - Planning meetings and programs, outreach to build membership; inform current members; education; notification
• Fundraising and Events - track goals, inspire attendees to donate; analyze and expand efforts; plan social events (movie nights, etc.)
• Communications (Monday Morning News, website, Facebook, Twitter, blog, etc) - outreach to build membership/inform current members
• Training - prepare candidates as well as workers to help candidates and causes

Women's Leadership Development

The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women will hold the 2017 Women's Leadership Development Event "Linking Arms for Social Justice: If Not You, Then Who?" from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. on March 30 at City Hall. There is no fee or registration required to participate in the event. The Women's Leadership Development Event gives women the opportunity to learn how to get involved and make a difference in their community and is held annually as part of Women's History Month. The event will include a panel discussion entitled "Battling Fear and Hatred of the 'Other' Women - Certain Immigrants, People of Color, People of Certain Religions." There will also be an award presentation to the 2017 Emerging Leader, DWC Member Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer.

Tired of unequal pay? Did you know that women need to have worked ALL of 2016 and until April 4th of this year to earn what a man made in 2016 alone? Do you know about Lilly Ledbetter and her struggle to get paid back for YEARS of doing the same job as men, but getting paid significantly less?
The Monroe County Women's Commission and the City of Bloomington's Commission on the Status of Women have joined to produce a panel on Pay Equity. Panelists include Lynn Duggan, Associate Professor of Labor Studies at IU; Linda Lawson, Indiana State Representative from District 1; Quincy Sauer, Attorney with Macey and Swanson in Indianapolis; and Emma Cannon, Senior from Bloomington High School North. There will also be a representative of the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce.
This is a kid friendly event. Crayons and a special coloring book will be available for children.
